10 Questions for Love & Light’s Wedding Cinematographer

output_w1Zt2h

Wedding videography has typically taken the form of cheesy, boring hour-long films and in many respects, has lost any real art form whatsoever. If you have friends who have had this kind of “traditional” video shot at their wedding, I would imagine they would tell you that they have only watched their video once or twice. Imagine spending all that money on a product that you barely enjoy.

Enter Love & Light Productions! We created our brand specifically with the idea of adding a cinematic flare to your wedding video and to produce a truly unique and memorable film of your day; one that you & your family will enjoy watching over & over again.  We don’t refer to it as videography… we call it filmmaking.

So, with all of the above in mind, what do you need to know before you hire someone to shoot video on the most important day of your life?  What questions should you be asking your potential wedding videographer?  Love & Light’s very own wedding cinematographer breaks it down for you :).

Question #1 – Do I connect with the style of their work?  Is their work cinematic, documentary-style, romantic…?

This is important.  When you are browsing through and watching wedding films on any videographer’s website, are you left feeling like you want to see more?  Do you love the selected music and editing style that the videographer employs?  If you do, that’s a wonderful sign!  If you’re left feeling unemotional and bored, they might not be the right fit for you.  We want our films to evoke major emotions and tug at our viewers’ heart strings– whether you personally know the couple in the video or not.

Question #2 – Are they available for my date?  Are their any travel fees involved if my wedding is out of state?

After deciding whether or not you connect with the style of their work, contact them to see if they are available for your wedding date.  If they aren’t, ask if they can recommend you to another videographer in your area.

As far as out-of-state weddings go, your videographer may charge you an additional travel fee.  At Love & Light, this travel fee is based upon the distance and details of the wedding.  Any venues or locations further than 40 miles from our office shall require payment for travel expenses at the current IRS mileage rate (which is 54 cents per mile in 2016).  Venues or locations more than 90 miles from our office shall require overnight hotel accommodations for the night of the Event.  Any airfare and/or hotel accommodations shall be covered by the client.

Question #3 – Do I actually like them as a person?

Are you planning on meeting with your videographer before you decide to book them?  You probably should!  Your videographer, along with your photographer, will be spending a ton of time with you on your wedding day– probably more than anybody else you hired!  Which is why it’s so important to vibe with them!  Whenever we get a wedding inquiry at Love & Light, we send out a questionnaire to ask a few questions about your day, and then we always ask to meet up and grab coffee!  Booking is an interview process for us as well.  We think it’s important that we connect well with our couples.

Question #4 – Are they organized?

When you think of the type of person you want your videographer to be, do you imagine them being organized and efficient?  We believe it is super important that the videographer you choose keeps things orderly and streamlined for your day.  The day goes so quickly, so punctuality, communication and an understanding of the timeline of the entire day are all a must.  We provide our clients with a detailed timeline of the entire day so that we are all on the same page.

Question #5 – How much do they charge and what kind of final video will they be producing for me?  How long will it be?

A value simply cannot be placed on the importance of your wedding day film, but you do want to make sure you are able to fit a wedding videographer into your budget.  The attention to detail and the amount of time it takes for a good wedding cinematographer to plan for, shoot and edit a high quality wedding film is well worth the money in the long run. You really don’t want to pay less and hire someone who is inexperienced– we have heard horror stories of brides who don’t even enjoy watching their own wedding film, which is heartbreaking!

At Love & Light Productions, we have two options for film length.  Our base collection includes an approximately 10+ minute short film.  We also are able to make a shorter highlight reel if that is something you are interested in adding on.  The highlight reel is approximately 3-5 minutes in length. See an example of one of our highlight reels here —>  Highlight Reel

Question #6 – What does he/she require to book their services?  (i.e.: a Retainer Fee?  A signed contract?)

A lot of times, you will be asked to put down 50% of the total price upon booking your videographer.  This is how we reserve your date at Love & Light.  You will also review and sign a detailed contract that will explain the legalities and specifics about the services and product(s) that you will receive.

Question #7 – Will they mic us for the vows during the ceremony?  Will they capture the audio and the beautiful words that are spoken during the speeches at the reception?

Yes!  We even double-mic so as not to miss any important audio.  Audio is what we use as the foundation for your wedding film.  Bad audio can ruin a good film, so make sure your videographer has a plan for picking up quality audio of the words spoken on your day.

Question #8 – Has he/she ever worked with my wedding photographer?  Does he/she know him/her well?

At Love & Light, we are a packaged deal!  We are able to provide you with both photos and video for your day.  We feel this is what makes us so unique.  However, if you have already booked your photographer and are only looking to hire a videographer, we can do that as well.  We always make sure to reach out to your photographer so that we can get to know them and be on the same page on the day of the wedding.

Question #9 – Do we get to pick our own songs for our film?

Typically, we do not allow our clients to pick the songs for their film.  We license all of our music through independent companies, therefore it may not even be possible to license a song that you think you would want in your film.

However, with that being said, sometimes we spend daylooking for the perfect song(s) to use in your film.  This is not something we take lightly.  Fortunately, after getting to know you before your wedding and spending so much time together, we typically feel we have a pretty good grasp on your overall “style” and what songs would work best for your film.

Question #10 – How long will it take to receive our final film?

You should know when to expect your video(s) to be finished.  In fact, it should say in your contract (as mentioned above).  You don’t want your video back too quickly or too slowly, necessarily.  We take the time to get to know each of our couples and make sure to learn their story.  This is such an important first step in producing a film that really connects with the audience and has true meaning.  Each of our wedding films are created paying attention to small details and special moments.  Because the editing process is very extensive, we limit our production number each year.  Keep in mind, wedding videographers sometimes film 40 or more weddings a year.  We feel that limiting our production number is the only way each of our couples will receive a final film that not only documents their love story, but are true pieces of art.  With that being said, we tell our clients to allow up to 6 months for the delivery of their final film.  Your film will be posted online to our Vimeo page for your personal viewing before we post it on our social media pages for the public.  We will email you a link to your film, and will also mail you 2 custom-designed flash drives of your film as well.

Kenny + Jennifer | Omaha Engagement

Kenny + Jennifer | Omaha Engagement

We love living in Nebraska! It’s really amazing that we get to enjoy all four seasons. As much as all of us gripe and moan about winter, we should all really embrace it! How lucky are we that we get to enjoy Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. The colors, the smells and the feelings bring us nothing but pure joy! Jennifer & Kenny knew they wanted a winter engagement session. We are always so excited when a couple has a vision and we take it on with a vengeance! It was a very brisk day in January but that didn’t stop us from having a blast. With snow pants and several layers of leggings we brought this session to the next level. Jennifer & Kenny couldn’t be any cuter! They performed lifts and defied all odds with several outfit changes (in the car) and they couldn’t have looked any more amazing. Don’t let these engagements pictures fool you. It was cold. Really cold. But they played the part and looked amazing! We are so excited for their future together! Congrats to Kenny & Jennifer for being awesome! You guys owned your winter engagement session and the images prove it! Love & Light to the both of you!

The Crocketts | Married in Indiana

When we got the call from Courtenay & Alex that they wanted their wedding to be filled with Love & Light…..we were all over it!  We are used to destination weddings but this one was different.   This one was based in Indiana, in the brides’ gorgeous hometown of Muncie.  And to be quite honest with you…..we’ve never met anyone from Indiana that we didn’t like.  So, we embarked on the ten hour drive from Omaha, through the night and in the wee hours of the morning we pulled into the long dirt drive.  At the end of the tree lined path is the most beautiful Victorian house.  Much like a doll house!  This beauty is restored with all of its original woodwork and you can feel the love literally pouring out of the house.  Oh…..and there is a donkey named Jill.  And just like that, it was LOVE at first sight.

When this adorable twosome contacted us they already had a vision for their engagement photos.  And we absolutely LOVE that! Shruti & Abi met in Chicago while in college.  It’s been several years and they have endured a long distance relationship since then.  Shruti’s laugh is completely contagious and Abi has been bitten by it.  These two are ever so in Love, so we took on their vision and filled it with Light.  Enjoy!  Because we sure did!

What is the Number One Wedding Day Regret?

What is the Number One Wedding Day Regret?

Wow.  I just stumbled upon a really eye opening statistic.  Did you know that a brides biggest regret on her wedding day is NOT hiring a videographer?  Actually, according to Bridal Guide, 78% of all brides wish they could go back and do it all over.  But this time, maybe not splurge on smaller less meaningful items that are easily forgotten as your day has passed.  Being able to sit back, press play and relive your wedding day WILL make you fall in love with your husband all over again.  In fact, I (Audrey) usually joke with Jennifer (my uber talented bestie/kick ass videographer) that she is single handedly saving marriages for years and years to come.  So, moral of this blog post….if you even have an inkling that you would like to hire a wedding videographer for your big day…go for it.  #noregrets #justsayin

The sunset at Lake Zorinsky during Abbey & Jesse’s photoshoot didn’t fade quietly.  It went down with a blaze of color and we were ever so thankful to witness it… and how handy that we had a gorgeous couple to photograph and take advantage of all its glory.  The evening air was warm and you could hear the trees applaud as a gentle breeze rolled through.  Nights like this remind us of how lucky we really are.  Lucky in love & lucky in Light.

Enjoy!

From the moment we first met Kyle & Elena, we knew right off the bat that they were unique.  They are so special because they have this magical, tangible love that immediately fills up whatever space they are occupying together.  You can spot it from a mile away– the way Kyle giggles at Elena’s jokes (even if the jokes are at his expense).  Or the way that he opens the up car door for her… or the way he lets her pick which new restaurant to try.  You can see it in the way they motivate each other to be the best version of themselves possible.  Kyle & Elena embrace each other’s differences.  He is an extreme organizer/researcher and a lover of all things neat.  She, on the other hand, is a carefree spirit– not to mention a dancing machine and Michael Jackson’s biggest fan.  But even through these differences, they have one very important thing in common…

Love.

And as the song goes… Love is all you need.

On their wedding day, April 25th, 2015, the air was not full of nerves but of excitement & happiness.  Elena was all smiles as her closest family and friends surrounded her.  As the girls got ready, a Michael Jackson Pandora station softly played in the background, quite opposite from how loudly the King of Pop’s songs would be playing later on in the evening at the reception!

Meanwhile in Kyle’s room, the boys were busy drinking energy drinks and getting into their military apparel… which is a pretty intense process.  It was so cool to watch!  Each badge is strategically placed by measuring the distance between one badge to another.  It has to be extremely precise.  With this being our first Military Wedding, we were fascinated by the whole operation.  It’s a beautiful tradition that makes one feel proud and full of happy spirits.

The ceremony was at The Magnolia Hotel in downtown Omaha.  It was the absolute perfect setting for this pair.  This venue gives off an old-world kind of vibe that is traditional and simple.  It’s a gorgeous hotel filled with beams of window light and antique decor.  The rain quickly dried from the early morning April showers and the sun poked out from behind the clouds with just enough sunlight to illuminate the courtyard for the ceremony.

It was a picture-perfect day that ended with hours of dancing, laughing and loving.  So here’s to Kyle & Elena!  We adore you two.  Your marriage brings hope, happiness and promise to the lives of others.

To Look or Not to Look? | Omaha Wedding Photography

To Look or Not to Look? | Omaha Wedding Photography

Omaha wedding photographer-005

For many traditional couples the idea of a groom seeing his soon-to-be bride in her wedding dress before she walks down the aisle is completely out of the question.  The tradition actually comes from way back in the day when marriages were arranged and couples weren’t even allowed to know each other let alone SEE each other before the ceremony (can you imagine?!).   Marriages were more of a business transaction and fathers would actually “give the bride away”, i.e. walk them down the aisle, to finalize the deal.

Well, thank goodness times have changed!  Nowadays, brides and grooms keep this same tradition only to preserve the anticipation and excitement of seeing their significant other on their big day. And then we have non-traditional couples that are opting to do a “first look” before the ceremony.  To these couples, setting aside a few moments to be with each other allows them to slow down and take it all in before the vows.  These couples love the idea that the initial reaction and the tears and excitement that accompany a “first look” can be shared privately in an intimate setting rather than in front of hundreds of guest.

At Love & Light Productions, we’ve done many weddings both ways.  But, until recently, we had never had a couple that wanted to do a “first no-look”!  We were super happy when Elena & Kyle brought up the idea!  Watching these two made our hearts melt because we could instantly see their love for each other as they held hands around a doorway at The Magnolia Hotel in downtown Omaha.  We get goosebumps even thinking about it!

As wedding photographers, we love the idea of being able to capture these moments on the wedding day because it is such a beautiful experience filled with so many wonderful emotions.  After every wedding, the warm and fuzzies stay with us for days!  We are forever grateful to our ever-growing family of brides and grooms that we get the opportunity to work with 🙂

Bridal Sessions: What They Are and Why You Should Do One!

Omaha Wedding Photography-013

Omaha Wedding Photography-020

Omaha Wedding Photography-042

At Love & Light Productions, Bridal Sessions are something that we get super excited about shooting. However, when we meet with couples during initial consultations, many of our brides have questions about what exactly a bridal session is. Once we explain it to them, they agree that it is such a fabulous idea! We decided to write a blog about these special portrait sessions, just in case you need some more information, too.

A bridal session is actually a southern tradition. (Pass the sweet tea, y’all! 😉 ) This session is shot before the wedding day, and sometimes these photos are even displayed at the reception.

Bridal sessions are awesome for a variety of reasons. One of those reasons being a chance for the bride to do a trial run of wedding day hair, makeup, dress, shoes, accessories, etc. “Testing” these things out is important! It may even help relieve any looming anxiety you have about certain things, such as the hairstyle you are planning to rock or the eye makeup you are envisioning. Bridal sessions can be shot after the wedding day, but we think it’s more fun (and makes more sense) to shoot them before. Shooting a bridal session before your wedding will allow you to make any necessary changes before the big day.

A trial run for hair, makeup, the dress, etc. isn’t even the BEST reason for doing a bridal session! Another major plus is that your photographer will have 1-2 additional hours to get creative shots that the wedding day timeline might not allow for.   Want to ride on a ferris wheel at the local carnival in your wedding dress? You got it! Want to skip around in a field of flowers while your wedding dress beautifully blows in the wind behind you? How about hopping on a horse and riding into the sunset? Yes, yes and yes! Everything we just mentioned would most likely not be able to be squeezed into a wedding day timeline.

So there you have it! That’s why we Love & Light Bridal Sessions! Call us today at 402-578-5591 or email loveadlightomaha@gmail.com to book a bridal session! Or simply click > here. We promise you won’t regret it.
